I rate this book two stars. I read the back of the book, and really expected to like it because it is a Cinderella story. I enjoyed the descriptions of the Chinese culture, including the discussion of bound feet. However, I found the story hard to get into, and didn’t interest me until the very end. I felt that I couldn’t relate to the main character, and that the stepmother wasn’t really as evil as she was supposed to be. It was a quick and easy read.

I rate this book 3 stars. It was a little slow for me–even though it was an easy read. I thought the language that the author used was beautiful–her imagery was very vivid. She alludes to Chinese culture and tradition, which may be difficult for some to understand. I liked Xing Xing, the main character. The end was very satisfying. A good choice if you like historical fiction.
