I rate this book four stars. It was a very fast read that was easy to get into. The book deals with a very sad topic, the largest slave auction in American history, in a new and interesting way. I liked how the book was written in dialogue, which made it easy to identify with the characters. I really felt for all of the people in the novel. I found myself thinking about it when I wasn’t reading it. I would recommend this book to all students and teachers who are interested in a good, emotional story that will also teach you about an often forgotten event in American history.

I rate it a 4. As a former history teacher, I liked the subject and I found the dialogue style interesting. The author did a good job of bringing the horrible institution of slavery alive for readers.

I would rate this book 5 stars. I finished it in a day because I couldn’t put it down. I liked that the book was written in dialogue. The characters were very real. Pierce Butler, the slave master, really made me angry. Emma, a slave, made me cry. This is a well-written book. Anyone with an interest in history would probably enjoy.
